Sani Pass Road Improvement Impacts

South Africa and Lesotho

Randall Gross and ADEC completed the economic inputs to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of proposed improvements to the Sani Pass Road from KwaZulu-Natal Province (South Africa) into the Kingdom of Lesotho through the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the key issues is the impact of the road improvements on both South Africa’s and Lesotho’s economic development, in terms of the Mohair Industry (for which Lesotho is a world leader); and in terms of eco- and adventure-tourism, where much of the current tourism base depends on rough road conditions and low levels of commercial development. Randall Gross and ADEC completed this work as part of a team led by engineering firm Arcus Gibb.
